Rivers, Eagles, and Flow — Field Notes with Rachel Dickson

8/20/25

Greetings, wild ones, truth-tellers, and keepers of inner fire.

Saturday I joined a group of delightful adventurers on the Tuckasegee River in North Carolina. Over the years, I’ve learned that adventuring with a like-minded group creates a very unique collective energy.

These experiences are valuable for so many reasons: the bonding, the unexpected challenges, and the moments that push us outside our comfort zones. Sometimes those challenges are individual, sometimes collective...but always revealing. Moments like these teach us about ourselves and each other, and choosing to step into a situation where anything is possible—within the safety of a knowledgeable, supportive group—is priceless.

If you find yourself stuck in a rut, I encourage you to challenge yourself with something new. And if you’re already familiar with personal or group adventures like this, keep doing them...the lessons and rewards are tremendous.

This day included a few “mishaps”: some boats capsized, some paddlers swam. But in a group like this, everyone looks out for each other, which allows for even more stretching, experimenting, and learning. Remember what it was like to be a kid, when everything was new and we tried it anyway? Adventures like these remind us to let ourselves play a little.

And then… the magic moment. A large shadow moved across the front of my boat on the water. I looked up and saw a majestic bald eagle soaring above our group. In an instant, it swooped down, expertly caught a fish from the river, and flew upstream, gliding just above the water.

It all happened in seconds. I was the only one who saw it snatch the fish, so I yelled, “EAGLE! Bald eagle!!” and the group turned to watch the bird trail off upstream. A once-in-a-lifetime moment—a front-row seat to Nature’s grandeur.

Whitewater rivers like the Tuckasegee do something extraordinary to me: they act as a tuning fork for my soul. They breathe new life into every part of my body and sharpen my intuitive awareness. It’s electric. Fleeting glimpses of wildness, like this eagle, remind me of the unseen energies swirling around us—renewing excitement, courage, and curiosity to explore without fear.

A Moment of Ethereal Awareness
Seeing an eagle in a shared experience—like our 10-boat group—is often interpreted as a sign that Spirit sees you and supports you. It emphasizes the power of collective energy, guidance, and the sacredness of the moment.

Suggested Takeaway:
Consider this sighting a spiritual nudge: “Rise above, trust your intuition, act with courage, and honor the sacred flow of life...both individually and together.”

Moments like these—where wild magic intersects with human presence—simply confirm how connected everything is, in and around us, always.

Raise your awareness. See your surroundings. Embrace the challenges. Stay in flow.

Wild-Heart Practice of the Week:

Flow With the Field

This week, practice tuning into the energetic currents around you—both in nature and in your daily life.

  1. Step into Awareness: Find a quiet moment, indoors or outside. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and feel the space around you. Sense the energy flowing through the room, the park, or even your own body.
  2. Notice the Interplay: Think about your interactions over the past day—people, animals, even plants or objects. How did your presence affect the field? How did the field respond?
  3. Reflect & Journal: Capture one example of where you consciously influenced the energy around you. What did you notice? How did it feel?
  4. Optional Nature Connection: If you can, go to a nearby river, stream, or forest. Observe how water flows, leaves move, or wildlife reacts. Let the natural rhythms remind you of your own innate ability to attune, flow, and respond with awareness.

Intention for the Week:“I notice, I honor, and I flow with the energy around me—allowing both giving and receiving to guide my path.”

How about a little virtual high-five?

If something here sparked a shift, a smile, or a quiet “yes” inside, this is an easy way to say, “That touched me.”
No pressure—just gratitude and a heartfelt thank you for showing up.
If this resonated, leave a little tip to help keep Field Notes alive—every gesture of support means the world

Field Notes is a weekly dispatch.
A pause in the noise.
A place to come home.
One breath at a time.

10/23/25 Hey there, quiet alchemists, truth-tenders, and rememberers of what matters! quintessence This fascinating term dropped back into my orbit this week. I love being reminded of things I once deeply pondered and now carry within my being. And when I’m reminded of them...is like a spark or a bolt of lighting...a reverberating AHAH moment! This word comes from the Latin words quinta essentia. Quinta being “fifth” and Essentia being “essence”. But what is quintessence? “Ancient and...

10/17/25 Greetings, brave feelers and quiet seekers….travelers of both the outer world and the inner one. If you were to go to my blog and read the entry I wrote on September 8th, 2024 here is what you would find…. Change Working in the outdoors I've had the pleasure of being witness to change each and every day. How the light hits the river water in the morning, the sounds of insects and birds and the rippling water over rocks. It's easy to notice change when you're in awareness of your...

10/01/25 Greetings, fellow wanderers, wild-idea dreamers, meaning makers, and seekers of clarity, courage, and quiet joy! I see you. Because I am you… and you are me. “Wherever we insist on pushing our differences on others, we feel separation. We name this separation resistance, laziness, loneliness, depression, anxiety, or some kind of lack in ourselves. Then we claim these as ‘who we are’—I am resistant, I am lazy, I am lonely, I am anxious, I am stupid, I am unappreciated, I am unworthy,...
