Field Notes: When a Wild Idea Shows You the Way

9/25/25

Greetings, fellow wanderers, wild-idea dreamers, and seekers of clarity, courage, and quiet joy!

“What are you cultivating? What are we nurturing in our life? What are we giving our energy, resources, and attention to? Because whatever we are experiencing now is what we have been cultivating up until now.” (excerpt from The Zero Point Agreement—How to be who you already are by Julie Tallard Johnson)

This shifts the narrative, doesn’t it? It brings the focus home and shines light on the truth: what we think about, what we give our energy to, what we allow to grow—that’s where our “harvested fruit” comes from.

We each have a choice in how we spend the same 24 hours we’ve been given. And so I ask: if you could remove all fear… and had every resource at your disposal… what would you create?

I sometimes get these “wild, cockamamie ideas” and then ask myself, What if? What if I leaned into this? What if I explored the edges of this idea? And as soon as I find a starting point, the next step—and the next and the next—begins to unfold.

That’s exactly how it happened when the opportunity to open an art gallery practically fell into my lap. I asked: If I were to do this, how would I do it?

The building was the first step—the space that appeared to begin. Then came the questions: How would the bills get paid? I knew foot traffic alone wouldn’t cover it, so a spark of an idea arrived: What if I rented space to artists, the way antique malls rent to dealers?

Then came more questions: What about commission on sales? Insurance? Utilities? The layout of the interior? The exterior of the storefront? Signage? Each question carried me forward as I picked up the phone, made inquiries, and discovered the path step by step.

As you follow the blazes on that trail, fascinating things appear—seemingly out of nowhere. But in truth, they spring from the energetic spark of your initial thought.

And yes, fear comes right alongside. Can I do this? Will I fail? All of it. But if you’re serious—if you know in your deepest knower that it’s possible (and it always is, because anything is possible)—you must rein in those negative thoughts. Show them the door. Toss the key aside. Stay present. Stay focused on what’s possible.

I’ll never forget the day the exterior signage was installed. Seeing “Dickson Gallery of Fine Art” go up was the moment it became undeniable: this is real.

So I ask you again: if you could create anything, what would you create? Feel into it with every ounce of imagination. This is how greatness is born.

And here’s the thing: opportunities to imagine, create, and transform don’t just live in our minds. They come alive when we gather, when we pause to reflect, when we choose to release the old and make space for the new.

That’s why I’m so excited to invite you to our next in-person gathering—on Sunday October 5th.

Wild-Heart Practice of the Week: What if?

This week, give yourself permission to dream without limits.

  1. Set the Scene — Take 10 minutes with a journal, a cup of tea, or even while walking outside. Breathe deeply and quiet the chatter.
  2. Ask the Question — If fear was completely off the table, and every resource you needed was already in place… what would you create?
  3. Follow the Blazes — Write down the first step that comes to mind. Then the next. Then the next. Don’t worry about the how—just let the trail reveal itself.
  4. Name the Fear, Release the Fear — When doubts arise (“But what if I fail?”), write them down. Then cross them out. Literally. Draw a line through them and let them go.
  5. Anchor in Gratitude — Close by naming one thing you’re grateful for right now. Gratitude fuels possibility.

Your imagination is the spark. Your courage is the fire. This is how transformation begins.

Something for the Path
Here’s a powerful piece of music by Ayla Nereo called “The Course.”
Within it you’ll find this compelling message:

This breath we been given
This life we are tending
This garden we are seeding
For the ones yet to come

Oh who will fetch the water
Will it be your great grand-daughter
My darling
Who'll fetch the water?

I’m passing this along in case it wants to find a place on your playlist too. It's almost a daily listen for me.

The Course from the album The Code of Flowers by Ayla Nereo.
Enjoy!

12/03/25 Hello, wild-hearted, truth-tellers, hope-dealers and beautiful souls! When I was a kid...my parents told me I was a “strong-willed child.” (Thank you James Dobson). This wasn’t any kind of badge of honor. Trust me. This was a way to label someone who was different...someone who pushed against the expected...someone who asked a lot of questions for better understanding...someone who didn’t just accept the status-quo as gospel. Many things that I was told just didn’t resonate with...

11/27/25 Greetings Creators, Collaborators, Hope-Dealers, Bridge-Builders and Bringers of Light! If you’re new here — welcome. Field Notes is a weekly dispatch of reflection and soul care sent every week. It’s Thanksgiving Day here in America. And this is the first year in many years that I did not make a made-from-scratch pumpkin pie. I distinctly remember when I was living in Tennessee ….when I decided from that day forward I would always make a pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving. This was due to...

11/21/25 Hello, quiet souls finding meaning in ordinary moments. A Note on Gratitude (and a Slow Driver) I didn’t feel inspired when I sat down to write this. No big revelation. No thunderbolt of insight.Just a small memory from my moment on the road. There was a driver in front of me going slower than I wanted. You know that feeling — the tightening, the impatience, the silent wishing they would just move along. And then something unexpected happened. I thought:What if? What if that driver...
