The Year I Didn’t Make the Pumpkin Pie —Field Notes with Rachel Dickson

11/27/25

Greetings Creators, Collaborators, Hope-Dealers, Bridge-Builders and Bringers of Light!

If you’re new here — welcome. Field Notes is a weekly dispatch of reflection and soul care sent every week.

It’s Thanksgiving Day here in America.
And this is the first year in many years that I did not make a made-from-scratch pumpkin pie.

I distinctly remember when I was living in Tennessee ….when I decided from that day forward I would always make a pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving. This was due to the fact that most Tennesseans don’t make pumpkin pies. They make pecan pies. And I had realized on this particular day that if I wanted to eat pumpkin pie...I was going to have to make it for myself.

There was a year or two I bought a pumpkin pie at the store. Gross. Just sheer crap those store bought versions. No better pie can be had on Thanksgiving Day than homemade pumpkin. Yep, I said that. And I stand by what I said. Until...I saw the dessert spread at last year’s friendsgiving gathering.

On this day...in 2024...I’d been invited to attend a friendsgiving of friendsgivings! Last year was my first year celebrating Thanksgiving with this group. I took a homemade, made-from-scratch (crust and all) pumpkin pie. And I ...and one other person had a piece. Not because it wasn’t delicious….it was completely due to the fact that the other desserts there were...let’s just say on par with Martha Stewart or Julia Child level desserts. The kind you’d expect to see on the cover of Southern Living magazine in November.

So...this said. I’ve officially been liberated from the need to make a pumpkin pie this year. Because...let’s face it...pumpkin pie cannot match up to the delights of dessert offerings at this gathering. All freshly made with love. Caramel things, chocolate things, fruit things, frosted things….

And I cannot begin to express how grateful I am to have such a wonderfully kind, loving and whole-hearted human beings to celebrate thanks with today!

Cheers to you and yours however you celebrate this holiday together.

May it be full of Joy and Laughter and Love!

Wild-Heart Practice of the Week:

At some point during this holiday week:
Pause.
Place a hand on your heart.
Name three things you are deeply grateful for — slowly.
Not what you think you should feel grateful for…
but what’s actually alive and true in this moment.

A Gift of Gratitude for You:

Gratitude isn’t just for Thanksgiving — it’s a practice.
A way of choosing where your attention rests.

When you turn toward what is good, steady, and true, something shifts: you move from lack into presence, from scarcity into support.

Even a few intentional moments of gratitude can soften your nervous system, strengthen resilience, and change how you see your world.

For our Full Harvest Moon Gathering in October, we created a 10-page Gratitude Journal as a space to reflect and remember what sustains you.

This week, I’m sharing it again as a gentle gift — a place to pause, breathe, and practice gratitude as devotion, not obligation.

Open your Gratitude Journal here.

It’s free. No strings. No catch.
Just a link to the pdf there for you.

Meditation + Soul Care:

If you’re feeling full… or tender… or stretched thin this season,
I’ve created a few guided meditations to help you come back to center — some for deep grounding, and others designed to open you to guidance, insight, and internal messages.
They’re softly spoken, nature-rooted, and designed for real life — not perfection.

You can view or download them here:

New Art Mugs have Landed!

For those slow winter mornings, candlelit evenings, and quiet creative rituals…my newest Art Coffee Mugs are now available.

Each one features one of my original paintings and is meant to become part of your daily rhythm — your pause, your breath, your becoming.

Field Notes is something I write with you in mind each week —
a pause in the noise,
a soft place to land,
a place we return to together,
one breath at a time.

What are you grateful for today — really grateful for?
I’d love to hear. You can reply directly to this email.

Until next time,
Namaste,
Rachel

P.S. Thank you for being here — and for walking this steady path back to our hearts with me.

11/21/25 Hello, quiet souls finding meaning in ordinary moments. A Note on Gratitude (and a Slow Driver) I didn’t feel inspired when I sat down to write this. No big revelation. No thunderbolt of insight.Just a small memory from my moment on the road. There was a driver in front of me going slower than I wanted. You know that feeling — the tightening, the impatience, the silent wishing they would just move along. And then something unexpected happened. I thought:What if? What if that driver...

11/12/25 Hello, fire-starters, edge-walkers, and audacious hearts! What if? What if you went digging through my blog posts and landed on a post from October 19, 2012?I’ll save you the trouble and share it here — because it’s worthy of a revisit 14 years later. Here's a recap. My gosh, how time flies. Back in 2012, I was just beyond hobby-artist territory — painting, experimenting, and looking for new ways to stretch my creative wings. Somewhere along the way, I stumbled upon a call for...

11/05/25 Hey there, travelers between worlds — the inner and the outer, the seen and unseen! Entering the Deep, Dark Cave “In order to succeed as a Jedi Knight, one must identify one’s deepest fears and learn to overcome them. As part of his Jedi training, Yoda makes Luke enter the recesses of a dark cave where he will come face to face with himself as he confronts the fearsome apparition of Darth Vadar. When Luke enters the cave, he’s ignorant of the nature of these fears, he doesn’t know...
